Pérez to Red Bull?

While rumours in the Sochi paddock tend to announce Mexican driver Sergio Pérez moving to Haas in 2021, a well-informed source suggested to me that Pérez was being considered by Red Bull Racing for a drive alongside Max Verstappen next year.

Sergio Pérez is a top-class driver, witness his superb qualifying yesterday at Sochi (4th in the Racing Point, and always in front of his team-mate all week-end, without the latest evolutions on his car), who lost his drive at Aston Martin (former Racing Point), because of Sebastian Vettel’s great marketing value for the brand but not because of his performances.

Meanwhile, Alex Albon, Red Bull Racing second driver, while having a huge potential is struggling for pace, just as Gasly did last year, and finished qualifying a massive 1.2 sec from his team mate Max Verstappen.

At Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner and Helmut Marko might be tempted in taking Sergio Pérez and his Mexican backers on board (about 15 million $ a year, a welcome addition even for a well-funded team like RBR), thus giving Max Verstappen a team-mate who can keep him on his toes, and who would score big points week in week out.

Of course, Red Bull has no intention of dropping Alex Albon. The Thai is a very good driver with a huge potential that needs more time to unlock, and is of the same nationality as Red Bull’s biggest shareholder and a great character, therefor a move to sister team Alpha Tauri alongside Pierre Gasly for two more years could make sense for all.

Is it going to happen? The coming weeks will tell, but for Pérez it would be a well-deserved opportunity to finally move back into a top team.
