An impressive field arrived at the Formula 2 race called ‘Eifelrennen’ held at the great Nürburgring on May 2, 1971. It was therefor not easy for young (22) Niki Lauda to prove his worth, although he drove a competitive works March 712M Cosworth FVA (picture above).

Derek Bell had taken pole position in a Frank Williams-entered March 712M in front of François Cevert (Tecno TF71), Ronnie Peterson (March 712), Emerson Fittipaldi (Lotus 69) and Carlos Reutemann (Brabham BT30). Niki Lauda was eighth on the grid.

The race was won by French rising star François Cevert (Tecno) in front of Emerson Fittipaldi (Lotus) and Carlos Reutemann (Brabham). Cevert was already a Tyrrell Formula One driver at the time, who in October of the same year, was going to win the US Formula One Grand Prix at Watkins Glen.

Niki Lauda finished sixth at the Nürburgring that day and will have to wait three more years before scoring his first Grand Prix victory, at Jarama (Spain) in 1974, at the wheel of a Ferrari 312B3.
