When in 1986, Belgian Didier Theys decided to cross the Atlantic Ocean, in order to give a new dynamic to his career, he chose the Formula Super Vee Series, in the hope to win and to attract the attention of team bosses in the CART series.

Didier Theys recalls: “The 1986 Super Vee Series were the support races for the CART Series (now Indycar). If I wanted to make career in the US, I had no other choice but winning this Super Vee Championship”.

The Belgian continues: “The former champions of this championship were Al Unser Jr, Michael Andretti, Arie Luyendyk … so there was some pressure to perform well, but I was quite relax.”

“We were a bunch of friends, without any money, but with tremendous enthusiasm, who were there to win races and nothing else. The guys were super motivated and didn’t count their hours of work. We didn’t have money for spare parts, so I had to be careful while fast at the same time.”

“My team was composed by Tom Wurtz, who later became team-manager at Penske and Paul Antony, worked with March in F2 and later became team-manager at Alan Docking Racing. For me, it was the beginning of a new life and a great adventure… everything was new, I was paying my debts and I was winning races and championships … it was the American Dream”.
