Niki Lauda in his March 722-5 on the front row of the 1972 European Formula 2 Championship round at Thruxton, with François Cevert and Ronnie Peterson next to him, and Scot Gerry Birrell just behind.

Ronnie Peterson and Niki Lauda were the March drivers in both Formula 2 and Formula 1 in 1972 and drove for the STP-backed works F2 team, managed by Ray Wardell.

The season started well with Lauda winning at Thruxton (picture) and finishing second at Mallory Park, but the team was distracted by the problematic development of the March 721X in Formula One, and the title went to Mike Hailwood (picture below) in a works Surtees with Lauda finishing fifth in the standings.
