Bruno Giacomelli seems to be looking for something or someone, on the starting grid of the US Grand Prix West 1981, held at Long Beach. The likeable Italian had qualified his Alfa Romeo 179c in ninth position, his team mate Mario Andretti being in sixth position on the grid.
The American finished an excellent fourth (picture below) in a race dominated by the Williams’ FW07c of Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann who scored a superb 1-2 for Frank Williams’ team. Bruno Giacomelli did not finish the race, being involved in a collision that also eliminated Laffite and Lammers.
