Like this year’s edition, the 1968 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours was held in September because of the May events and the victory went to the glorious Ford GT40 (chassis no 1075, the one that will triumph again 9 months later in the hands of Jacky Ickx and Jackie Oliver) of endurance aces Lucien Bianchi and Pedro Rodriguez.
The Mexican replaced Ickx at the last minute, the young Belgian having been injured a week before, during practice for the Canadian Grand Prix at Mont Tremblant, when his Ferrari 312 suddenly went off-track, throttle blocked.
Otherwise, “Mr Le Mans”, already winner of the Watkins Glen 6 Hours with fellow Belgian Bianchi, would have had another victory to his impressive tally at la Sarthe…
