Webber’s first

In the lead up to the 2009 German F1 Grand Prix, despite 6th place at the British Grand Prix, Jenson Button maintained a 23-point lead over Brawn GP teammate Rubens Barrichello in the Drivers’ Championship.

The fight for pole, which was solely between the four championship contenders – the Brawns of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello and the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber who claimed the first pole position of his career. The Australian described it as a very special moment”.

On Sunday, Mark Webber took his first Grand Prix win (picture above), with Sebastian Vettel coming second, giving Red Bull their third 1-2 of 2009. Mark said it was an “incredible and emotional day”. Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner was vey satisfied: “Am so happy for Mark, he truly deserves it, and for the team, its a great result.”

An astute witness told us: “That was an incredible performance by Webber. Made up all the deficit from a drive through penalty, blowing away his team mate Vettel in the process. Probably the drive of his career.”

Webber’s win (picture below, leading Barrichello) was the first for an Australian driver since Alan Jones (1980 World Drivers’ Champion) won the 1981 Caesars Palace Grand Prix at Las Vegas in a Williams-Cosworth.
