Traffic jam of champions, at the 1978 US Formula 1 GP West held in the streets of Long Beach, California (picture above). The two Ferraris 312T3 of Reutemann (#11) and Villeneuve (#12), battle for position in the early stages of the race in the breaking zone, with the Brabhams BT46-Alfa of Watson (#2) and Lauda (#1).

Niki Lauda, the reigning World Drivers’ Champion had left Ferrari as soon as he had clinched the title, and took the number 1 with him to Bernie Ecclestone’s Brabham-Alfa Romeo team, to the great anger of Enzo Ferrari.

It was a great week-end for Carlos Reutemann, who first edged out team mate Gilles Villeneuve to take pole position, and in the race, took over at halfway mark from Villeneuve, when the Canadian crashed out of the lead, and won by eleven seconds over Mario Andretti in the Lotus 78 (picture below).
