The 1976 Dutch Grand Prix was held at Circuit Zandvoort on 29 August 1976. It was won by British driver James Hunt driving a McLaren M23 on his 29th birthday. This victory, in the absence of the injured Niki Lauda, enabled the Brit to progress within two points of his rival in the drivers’ standings.

Welch racing driver Tom Pryce (picture above), was sensational when he captured third place in qualifying in his unfancied Shadow, just two-tenths behind pole man Peterson (March) and Hunt (McLaren), but in front of the lone Ferrari of Clay Regazzoni.

In the race, nobody could stop championship contender James Hunt, who narrowly edged out Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari) and Mario Andretti (Lotus). Tom Pryce (Shadow) showed once again his speed and race craft by finishing in an excellent fourth place, just 6.94 seconds behind the winner.

Sadly the promising Tom Pryce, was killed in an accident during the 1977 South-African Grand Prix at Kyalami, before he could show more of his great potential in a top team.
