Lotus Years: After dominating the British Formula 3 series in a West Surrey Racing-entered Ralt, Mika Hakkinen moved into Formula 1 in 1991 with Team Lotus (photo above taken at Monaco), where he remained until the end of 1992.

Mika scored his first championship points by achieving an excellent fifth place at the 1991 San Marino Grand Prix, but these were the only points his scored all season. Ayrton Senna clinched his third Drivers’ World Title in his McLaren-Honda..

Mika Hakkinen was retained by Lotus for the 1992 season, alongside Brit Johnny Herbert. During the summer, the Finn had a string of very strong results confirming his huge potential. He finished 4th in France and 6th at the British Grand Prix, and again 4th in Hungary and 6th in the Belgian Grand Prix.

A total of 11 points and 8th overall for the young and promising Häkkinen in the 1992 championship, so much dominated by Nigel Mansell in the ‘active’ Williams-Renault FW14B.
