Argentinian Onofre Marimón (1923 – 1954), Juan Manuel Fangio’s protégé, talented and popular, pictured here-above in a works Maserati 250F at Reims in 1954, 4 weeks before he lost his life in this car at the Nürburgring, at the age of just 30.

He participated in 11 Formula One Grand Prix, achieved two podiums, and scored a total of eight championship points. Some observers saw in him a future champion.

Sadly, Marimón suffered a fatal accident on 31 July 1954 during practice for the 1954 German Grand Prix, he is seen here-below at the wheel of his Maserati 250F moments before the drama, when he lost control of his vehicle at high speed, attempting to improve his qualifying time.

It was later thought that his braking unit had failed. It was a very sad moment for Fangio and González, his great friends and compatriots, and for the whole racing community.
