For the 1977 season, Clay Regazzoni went to Ensign in F1 with the support of Swiss watch maker Tissot, but he also had the firm intention to participate at the Indy 500. The problem was, that he had to qualify at Indianapolis the same week as the Monaco Grand Prix and that he couldn’t reach the top 9 the week-end before, so he had to stay in the US, where he finally failed in his quest to make the grid at the 500 Miles.

In the meantime, at Monaco, Mo Nunn had to find a last minute replacement: he asked Jacky Ickx, who was present as a tourist in Monaco, before having to test for Porsche at Le Castellet on Monday. The Belgian champion put on his Martini race overall and his Bell helmet (note the small opening) and finished the race in 10th position, in his only Grand Prix of the year.
