Detroit was known as the capital of the auto industry in the past century, hosting the three American giants: Ford, GM and Chrysler.

In 1982, a first Formula One Grand Prix was organised; won by the McLaren of a surprising John Watson – only 17th on the starting grid – in front of local hero Eddie Cheever (Talbot Ligier) and Didier Pironi (Ferrari), a first and second Michelin, in the country of tyre manufacturer Goodyear.

The track design was chaotic (picture below) with right angle turns and a delicate hairpin where one can see the Fittipaldi of Chico Serra preceding the Williams’ of Rosberg and Daly as well as the Arrows’ of Surer and Baldi.
