While his team mate Jacques Laffite finished second in the 1975 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, the Brit Ian Ashley destroyed the second Williams FW04 during practice, in a delicate section of the race track called Pflanzgarten (it’s not Ashley on the picture above, it’s a marshal picking up his helmet).

As seen on this frightening image, he was saved by his small stature and rescued from the wreck with two broken ankles. Ashley had another incredible crash at Mosport (Canada) in 1977 (picture here under) when his Hesketh took off on a bump and smashed into a TV camera tower !

Suffering multiple fractures, he was never seen again in Formula 1 but tried a comeback in IndyCar ten years later, before retiring from racing and become a private jet pilot in the US: a somewhat less dangerous activity…
