Early 1990, Michael Schumacher, along with Formula 3 rivals Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Karl Wendlinger, joined the Mercedes junior racing programme in the World Sportscar Championship.

It was an interesting development in their career, as most of their contemporaries competed in Formula 3000 on the way to Formula One.

Indeed, Willy Weber, Schumacher’s manager, was convinced that being exposed to a professional environment and driving sophisticated and powerful cars in long-distance races would help his career. The future will prove him absolutely right.

Interestingly, it was indeed a good move for all three juniors, who later joined the Formula One ranks and had very respectable careers, but the most impressive one was without any doubt Michael Schumacher with 7 World Drivers’ titles, 91 victories and 155 podiums and 77 fastest laps.
