Patrick Tambay was offered to join the Scuderia Ferrari, after the death of close friend Gilles Villeneuve at Zolder in May 1982. During his 18 months in red, the French driver won two races, the 1982 German Grand Prix and the 1983 San Marino Grand Prix. He finished fourth in the 1983 Drivers’ Championship and worked closely with legendary engineer Mauro Forghieri (picture here-above taken in 1982, with his 1983 drivers, Tambay and Arnoux).

Tambay remembers: “I had a very good technical relationship with Mauro Forghieri. He was probably one of the best engineers I had the opportunity to work with, apart from Adrian Newey at Beatrice later on.”

“Mauro had a sixth sense for track set-up, for practice management and qualifying management,” continues Tambay,  “with very little input he would understand immediately what was happening, and react exactly to what was really necessary, would explain the reason why, and put you into a positive and confident frame of mind.”
