Early 1984, Ayrton Senna was impressive as a rookie during the preliminary tests at Rio. Alan Henry, reporter for Motorsport Magazine at the time, wrote:

“This driver with his yellow helmet, Ayrton Senna, winner of the last British F3 championship, had attracted the attention of all, with a few very aggressive laps…and showed early on he had what it takes to be a champion.”

“Ayrton seemed to know only one way to drive – full speed…” He added: “Watching him driving his Toleman at the limit, mastering this machine, filled me with enthusiasm, I could feel something special was happening.”

This Toleman TG183B, used at the start of the 1984 season, was an evolution of the car designed by South African Rory Byrne in 1983 and was later in the season replaced by the TG184 with which Senna scored three podiums (picture below).
