The 1973 Austrian Formula One Grand Prix was held at the fast and hilly Österreichring (Zeltweg), and was won by Swedish driver Ronnie Peterson, driving a Lotus 72, after he started from second position.

Scotland’s Jackie Stewart (picture above) achieved the final podium finish of his fantastic career, coming second in his Tyrrell 006, while Carlos Pace achieved his first, coming third in a Surtees-Ford.

To be noted: Niki Lauda, a BRM driver at the time, was forced to miss his home race, after breaking his wrist at the Nürburgring two weeks earlier.

At Monza, two weeks later, the great Stewart charged through the field after a puncture, finished fourth, which was enough to secure his third Drivers’ Championship.
