The three musketeers. “In 1982, the “Belgian Marlboro Team” was very promising”, remembers journalist Pierre Van Vliet.

The experienced Pierre Dieudonné (left), hired by the TWR Jaguar team in the European Touring Car Championship (after winning the 24 Hours of Spa in 1981 in a Mazda RX7 with Tom Walkinshaw), and the two great hopefuls, Thierry Boutsen (Formula 2 with Spirit-Honda) and Didier Theys (Formula 3 in a Martini-Alfa). These were three excellent Belgian drivers in their red and white overalls.

Pierre Dieudonné, as fast and reliable as ever, driving a TWR Jaguar XJS in the ETCC, took many top five finishes and a second place at the TT held at Silverstone.

Thierry Boutsen, in the Spirit-Honda, finished 3rd in the European Formula 2 championship with 50 points and three dominant victories at the Nürburgring, at Spa and at Enna-Pergusa, the Formula 1 bosses started to take notice.

Didier Theys, in the Oreca-entered Martini-Alfa finished in 5th position with 30 points in the European F3 championship, and eyed a progression into Formula 2 with the help of sponsor Marlboro.
