Too tall for a 512S

For the 1970 Daytona 24 Hours, Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team (NART) fielded three Ferraris 512S for Dan Gurney-Chuck Parsons in the #25 (picture above, on the banking, notice the modified roof), #24 for Sam Posey-Mike Parkes and #23 for Tony Adamowicz-David Piper.

In the race, nothing could stop the works Gulf Porsches 917K entered by JW Engineering though and Pedro Rodriguez, Leo Kinnunen and Brian Redman took a deserved victory. For Rodriguez it was his third Daytona win, for his team mates it was a first.

Being very tall (1.98m) and not really fitting in the small 512S cockpit, didn’t prevent Dan Gurney to participate. His team hastily modified the roof of his Ferrari as seen here-under, but Gurney and Parsons were forced to retire with mechanical problems after 464 laps. Their NART team mates finished in fourth and fifth.
