Modest backgrounds
Bruno Giacomelli and René Arnoux, two future Formula 1 drivers, while being fierce rivals on track, are obviously having a good time during their 1977 European Formula 2 campaign. Both drivers come from a modest background and move up the ladder, thanks to their obvious talent. Notice Riccardo Zunino’s March 772 in the background (picture-above).
The 1977 European Formula 2 season was contested over 13 rounds. French hopeful René Arnoux was, with four wins at Silverstone, Hockenheim, Pau and Nogaro the season champion, driving a Martini-Renault for Écurie Renault ELF.
Bruno Giacomelli showed a lot of promise in his Euroracing March 772-BMW, he finished fourth in the final standings with three wins at Vallelunga, Mugello and Donington. The popular Italian was going to dominate the 1978 European Formula 2 championship in a works March 782-BMW and, like his buddy René Arnoux, move up to the F1.
