In the years following his withdrawal from motorsport, New Zealander Mike Thackwell worked, among other occupations, as a helicopter pilot in the North Sea for British International Helicopters, a gold miner in the North-West of Western Australia and a as teacher in England.
The 1984 F2 champion is widely felt to have been one of the great ‘lost talents’ – a driver with tremendous ability, in the wrong place at the wrong time. He is believed to currently live on the South Coast of England, where he spends his free time surfing summer and winter when the waves allow.
A free spirit.
