Wolfgang von Trips, in a Ferrari 156, wins the 1961 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort (picture-above), and becomes the first German to win a F1 championship race. Trips, after a race-long battle, narrowly beats his Ferrari team mate Phil Hill, by less than one second on the finishing line.

Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips (1928-1961) was a German racing driver. Nicknamed “Taffy” by friends and fellow racers, he was the son of a noble Rhineland family. He took 27 Formula One starts between 1956 and 1961, won 2 Grand Prix and stood 6 times on the podium.

Sadly, he died in a terrible accident on the second lap of the 1961 Italian Grand Prix at Monza, when his Ferrari collided with Jim Clark’s Lotus on the long straight before the Parabolica, became airborne, and crashed into the crowd at high speed and killing 15 spectators…
