The 106th running of the 500 Miles of Indianapolis was held on Sunday 29 May 2022. Marcus Ericsson won the race for the Chip Ganassi Racing, and it was a very beautiful and deserved win for the discreet Swede.

Ericsson and Pato O’Ward were locked in a fantastic duel for the lead after the restart with two laps to go after a red flag, snacking around the oval in a breathtaking finish. The Mexican ended up second in the No. 5 Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet, in his best career “500” finish in three starts.

The gap between the two was 0.445 of a second with one lap to go, with O’Ward making a run toward the outside of Turn 1 on lap 200. He pulled slightly ahead of Ericsson but the Swede held the low line and forced O’Ward to lift the throttle.

Patricio O’Ward was understandably disappointed to finish second (picture above), he declared: “He was going to put me in the wall if I would have gone for it, we were alongside each other. It’s frustrating. It’s bittersweet. I’m so proud, but it definitely stinks.”

Zak Brown, boss of the McLaren team, who had chosen to be present at the Indy 500 over attending the Monaco Grand Prix, was the first to console and congratulate O’Ward after his great run. He knows, the 23 old has a brilliant future and he’s confident his time will come.
