The spectacular Shadow cars, contenders in the Can-Am series since a few seasons, finally harvested well deserved laurels in 1974: Jackie Oliver won the championship in front of team-mate George Follmer, with a historical 1-2 for the DN4’s on the beautiful Road America race track at Elkhart Lake.

It should be said that the monstrous Porsche 917-10 and 917-30 were excluded for 1974, the turbo engine being banned: they had dominated the North-American competition for the last two seasons.

Oliver had offered great resistance on board of the atmospheric Shadow DN2 powered by a V8 Chevy, as seen here on this image below, next to the Porsche 917-10 of Charlie Kemp, in the downhill section of Laguna Seca in 1973.
