In front of more than 350,000 race fans, Marcus Ericsson of Chip Ganassi Racing held off Pato O’Ward of Arrow McLaren SP and 2013 race winner and team mate Tony Kanaan to win the 2022 Indianapolis 500 and the 3.1m$ prize.

The discreet Swede drove an excellent race, always within striking distance of the lead, to score his third career IndyCar Series victory. Ericsson’s other two wins came in Detroit and Nashville, last season.

The last-lap battle for the lead was the moment of the race – two drivers, Ericsson and O’Ward, going flat-out and sometimes side-by-side, for a potential career-changing win. The Swede held the inside (and his foot down) of Turn 1 on the 200th and last lap, and O’Ward had no choice but to concede.

Marcus Ericsson explains: “I wanted to put him on the outside because I knew it was going to be hard to go around my outside. I was not going to lift; there was no way I was going to lift. I just kept my foot down , and that was the race-winning move.”
