The Hunt-Lauda rivalry and friendship has been very much documented in the press as well as in Ron Howard’s excellent movie “Rush”. James Hunt and Niki Lauda are seen here in 1976.

No real friendship without mutual admiration: Hunt very much admired Lauda’s determination and seriousness, while Lauda positively envied Hunt’s laid-back attitude and ‘joy of life’.

While they competed on the track, Hunt readily admitted that the two were good friends from their early “gypsying around Europe together” in Formula 3, where they became “mates, not just casual acquaintances”. The enduring friendship between the two continued until Hunt’s death in 1993.
