“He wanted to drive for Ferrari”

A few days before the tragic week-end at Imola in 1994, Luca di Montezemolo, then CEO of Ferrari, invited Ayrton Senna, a Williams-Renault driver at the time, for dinner in his home.

Luca di Montezemolo remembers: “I invited Ayrton to my house on the Wednesday before Imola 1994. He said he wanted to drive for Ferrari. I said I wanted him to drive for Ferrari. He was pleased I was against electronic aides, which he thought made average drivers seem as good as him. Three days later, sadly, he sadly died…”

I sometimes wonder what would Ayrton make of the DRS, without which nearly no overtake is possible nowadays, and which enables average drivers to easily pass the brilliant ones at the end of the straights… Well, am sure he would loathe it.

And we can only imagine (dream of) the legendary yellow helmet in a scarlet car, like in the impression here-under. Unfortunately, fate robbed us of this pleasure.
