The Ligier JS9 was a Formula One car manufactured and raced by Guy Ligier’s team during the 1978 Formula One season. Driven by popular Frenchman Jacques Laffite, its best finish was third (twice).

Designed by Gérard Ducarouge, helped by Michel Beaujon and Robert Choulet for the aerodynamics, JS9 featured an aluminium chassis, and was powered by the 60° Matra MS76 V12 engine.

The car made its debut at the 1978 Spanish Grand Prix at Jarama, (picture above) and showed great potential. Laffite qualified it 10th on the grid and in the race itself finished on the podium in third.

After finishing out of the points for the next three races, in a championship dominated by the ground-effect Lotus cars, Laffite finished third again in Germany, this time from seventh on the grid (picture below).

Jacques Laffite finished eighth in the Drivers’ Championship (won by Mario Andretti) and Ligier captured sixth position in the Constructors’ standings.
