“Captain nice”

Mark Donohue (1937-1975), nicknamed “Captain Nice” was an American race driver known for his ability to set up his own car as well as driving it very fast, very often to victory. His association with Roger Penske is legendary.

In 1969, Penske and Donohue raced in their first Indianapolis 500, with Donohue finishing 7th, winning the Rookie of Year Award. The American raced at Indianapolis each year following, finishing second in 1970 and 25th (picture above) in 1971.

Donohue won the legendary race in 1972, driving for Team Penske. He finished the race in his McLaren-Offy setting a record average speed of 162 mph (261 km/h).

The victory (picture below) was the first of 18 for Penske in the Indy 500.
