In 1967, Denny Hulme’s Eagle-Ford V8 participated at the Indianapolis 500, with sponsorship from the city of … Daytona Beach !

The New-Zealander, who was going to become that year’s Formula 1 World Champion for Brabham, finished 4th and best rookie of this 1967 edition at the Speedway, on the last Sunday of May.

He would race another three times at the Indy 500, but without finding success, like in 1970 when his hands were burned when his McLaren took fire. He courageously took part in a Can-Am race a few days later, to honor the memory of his friend Bruce McLaren, who was killed during a routine test at Goodwood.

A real ‘Kiwi’ like the founder of McLaren, “the old bear” (his nickname, because of his strong character) wanted to show his desire to perpetuate his friend’s work, a car make that till this day is a reference on all the race tracks in the world.
