The 1976 Silverstone 6 Hours was the third round of the World Championship for Makes.

Clear favorites were Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass in the beautiful Martini-Porsche 935, already winners of the first two rounds of the championship, at Mugello and Vallelunga. Their Porsche 935, powered by the famous 2.8 litre flat-6 turbo, was the latest important evolution  of the Porsche 911 Turbo.

BMW Motorsport tried to counter their German rivals and fielded a BMW 3.2 CSL Turbo for Swedes Ronnie Peterson and Gunnar Nilsson.

Jacky Ickx (Porsche) took a convincing pole in front of Ronnie Peterson (BMW), as seen on the picture above, but these two clear favorites were delayed by turbo problems and gearbox issues and John Fitzpatrick seconded by Tom Walkinshaw took a well deserved victory in their Hermetite BMW 3.5 CSL (picture here-under).
