The Canadian Grand Prix was held on 8 June 2008 at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montréal. The 70-lap race was won by Polish driver Robert Kubica for the BMW Sauber team after starting from second position. To this day, it is Robert Kubica’s only Grand Prix victory, he remembers:

“We were strong all week-end, not as strong as the McLaren of Hamilton, but not really far off. Because the asphalt was coming off, we had to be creative concerning optimal racing lines in several corners to avoid the asphalt pieces that were loose.”

RK: “Qualifying went well, I put the car second on the grid behind pole sitter Hamilton, so I knew we had a chance. In the race we had a good strategy and the team executed it well. Because I chose to stop twice, I had to push hard, pass my team-mate Heidfeld and create a big enough gap if I wanted to win.”

Kubica continues: “Everyone remembers the story with the red light at the end of the pit lane where Hamilton collided with Raikkonen, and fortunately as I was lined up next to Kimi, so nobody touched me. To win a Grand Prix, you need a bit of luck, but I believe we were in a position to win, even without the accident.”

Robert Kubica won the race, 16 seconds ahead of team mate Nick Heidfeld. It is also to this day, the only victory in F1 for the BMW-Sauber team.
