Annus horribilis

First American Formula One World Champion with Ferrari in 1961, Phil Hill was going to experience a ‘season in hell’ in the Grand Prix the following year, after the departure of some of the most important brains of the Scuderia, which jeopardised the development of the pretty 156 “sharknose”.
Only 12th on the grid of the 1962 British Grand Prix held at Aintree (picture above), he had to retire after a lacklustre race with engine trouble.
Luckily, Hill would find consolation in sports cars racing, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the third time, with his faithful co-driver Olivier Gendebien (picture below) in a Ferrari Testa Rossa.
