…and Patrese is the winner!

Riccardo Patrese (Brabham) was then leading on lap 75 but spun on oil at the Loews hairpin and stalled. Didier Pironi (in the sole Ferrari entered) now led, but his car ran out of fuel on the last lap. Andrea de Cesaris (Alfa Romeo) was about to take the lead, when he also ran out of fuel. Derek Daly was the next leader with one lap to go, when the gearbox of his Williams failed.
Riccardo Patrese meanwhile had managed to restart his Brabham, being pushed downhill by the stewards, judging he was in a dangerous position. The Italian, took the checkered flag and his first Grand Prix victory.
James Hunt commenting for the BBC : “Well, we’ve got this ridiculous situation where we are all sitting by the start-finish line waiting for a winner to come past, and we don’t seem to be getting one”.
