“Written in the stars”

The 1993 Brazilian Grand Prix was held at Interlagos. It was the second race of the 1993 Formula One Championship. The Williams-Renault’s of Alain Prost and Damon Hill were the class of the field, with the French driver taking pole position just ahead of his British team-mate, but 1.8 seconds (!) faster than local hero Ayrton Senna in third position.

In the race, there was a heavy rain shower and several drivers spun off the track. Prost, who had a substantial lead, lost control of his Williams when the rain came even harder, and crashed into Christian Fittipaldi’s car, taking them both out of the race.

Just after the tire stops Senna passed Hill for the lead and pulled away, but not without praying that the engine would not go out on the final laps, when the oil pressure light on the panel came on. The car broke down 50 meters past the finish line.

Senna declared: “If it’s written in the stars, no one can change it.”
