A sharp decline

After a good 1977 season, where Alan Jones won the Austrian Grand Prix for Shadow, Don Nichols’ team, entered into a sharp decline. Australian Alan Jones left to join Williams for 1978. In the same period a majority of their staff and their sponsor Franco Ambrosio left to form their own team, Arrows, taking the young Riccardo Patrese in their suitcase.

Despite sponsorship from Villiger tobacco and the signing of experienced drivers Clay Regazzoni and Hans J. Stuck for the 1978 season, results were poor. Regazzoni managed two fifth places in Brazil and in Sweden, while Stuck (picture here-under) finished fifth at the British Grand Prix. The team ended the season in 11th position in the Constructors’ Championship, a disappointment.
