Excellent performance by Jochen Mass (picture above) at the 1975 French Grand Prix, held at the Paul-Ricard circuit. The German had qualified his McLaren M23 in 7th position on the grid, well ahead of his team mate Emerson Fittipaldi, who was only tenth. Championship leader Niki Lauda (Ferrari 312T) was on pole.

At the start, Lauda led from Scheckter (Tyrrell), Hunt (Hesketh) and Mass, who had a great start. Soon Scheckter suffered handling issues and both Mass and Fittipaldi passed him.

Jochen, in great form, started to catch the leaders. On the last lap, he was only 2.4 sec behind Hunt’s Hesketh, who was closing on the Ferrari. Composed, Lauda held on to win and Mass took the fastest lap of the race and scored a nice podium.

Jochen Mass (picture below), very satisfied, declared: “The car felt fantastic on this circuit that I love,… in the closing stages I was flying, it was lots of fun.”
