Le Mans 1969. The race was one of the most exciting in the event’s history. More than one-third of the starting grid were Porsches, and the mighty 917’s held the lead for 90% of the race.

When the leading Porsche of Elford/Attwood broke (gearbox) after 19 hours, it was the Ford GT40 of Ickx and Oliver who took the lead. The race ended in a 3-hour sprint, with the leading GT40 battling the pursuing Porsche 908 of Hans Herrmann and Gérard Larrousse non-stop.

In the end, the JWA entered Gulf-Ford GT40 – the same chassis that had won the previous year – took the checkered flag by just 120 metres after 24 hours, giving Jacky Ickx his first of six victories at Le Mans.

Picture above: teams used garages in town in these days, and it was no different for the factory teams – here, Ford GT40 no 6  that will win the race.
