In 1983, French racing driver Philippe Alliot moved up to Formula 2, but hit the headlines that year when he finished third in the Le Mans 24 Hours with Mario and Michael Andretti in a Kremer Porsche 956 (picture above, Mario at wheel).

Philippe Alliot remembers fondly: “It was a unique moment in my career. As a young driver, racing at Le Mans, and finishing on the podium, with Mario Andretti and his son Michael, was unbelievable for me. My carefree youth didn’t enable me to realise at that moment that I was experiencing something unique.”

Alliot continues: “I remember, I noticed Mario was observing me, trying to see in which state of stress I was. Very soon, he was reassured, because together, we produced a good race. I also remember that Michael was not very fast… I later met Mario a few times in the US and at Indianapolis. He had both these American and Italian sides of his personality, that made him so friendly and very sympathetic.”
