The 1988 Detroit Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on June 19, 1988 in the streets of Detroit, Michigan. Ayrton Senna’s third win of the season made it six out of six for McLaren in 1988, on the way to an unprecedented 15 wins and ten 1-2 finishes in 16 races.

Senna dominated the race, with team mate Prost finishing in second place, albeit 38 seconds behind the winner. Best of the rest was Belgian Thierry Boutsen (picture below) who took third for Benetton, as he had a week before in Canada.

Thierry Boutsen, a three-time Grand Prix winner, tells exclusively for the HSOR: “Ah Detroit, I loved that track, you can tell from the smile on my face, on the podium picture! It had all the difficulties you can imagine! Bad asphalt, holes and ruts, guard rails and walls in concrete…”

He continues: “That’s where I first encountered Ayrton (who later became his close friend), we had a fantastic fight there on track in 1984. He drove a Toleman, while I was in an Arrows. Very fond memories.”
