The British Grand Prix was held on 16 July 1995 at the Silverstone Circuit. Johnny Herbert for the Benetton team won the 61-lap race from fifth position on the grid.

The race was dominated, however, by the fight between the two World Drivers’ Championship contenders Michael Schumacher (Benetton) and Damon Hill (Williams), until on lap 45, the two collided, and were forced to retire, when Hill attempted to pass Schumacher (picture below).

Thus Herbert took the checkered flag – to win his first Formula One race at his 74th attempt, a result that moved him from sixth to fourth in the standing. Jean Alesi (Ferrari) and David Coulthard (Williams) completing the podium.

The winner later declared: “What a joy to win in front of your home crowd, it was a dream come true, and a big relief, because Flavio (Briatore) was putting a lot of pressure on me, claiming I was not fast enough, compared to Michael (Schumacher).”
