The 1970 Italian Grand Prix was held at the Autodromo Nazionale di Monza on September 6, 1970. Sadly, the race was marred by the death of championship leader Jochen Rindt, who died driving his Lotus 72, during the practice session on Saturday.

The 68-lap race was won by Swiss Ferrari driver Clay Regazzoni, who narrowly held off Jackie Stewart (in a Tyrrell-entered March 701), for his first Grand Prix victory after starting from third position in his Ferrari 312B (picture above).

Clay Regazzoni impressed in his first season in F1, with four podium finishes and one victory (at Monza) in just his fifth Grand Prix start! He finished third in the World Championship, behind Jochen Rindt, crowned posthumously and team mate Jacky Ickx.

As soon as Regazzoni passed the finishing line, the Italian fans (the tifosi) invaded the track to celebrate another Ferrari victory. (see the superb picture below, taken by Manou Zurini).
