Bruno Giacomelli moved into Formula Two in 1977, working in close relationship with March founder Robin Herd and the factory team. He showed great promise and managed to score three wins and finish fifth in the 1977 European Formula Two Championship.

The Italian from Brescia stayed with the BMW-backed March factory team for the 1978 season and dominated as seldom seen before in this category. Apart from a third-place finish at Mugello and a second-place at Vallelunga, Giacomelli won eight of twelve races and won the title, beating runner up Swiss Marc Surer by 29 points.

Bruno Giacomelli became the first Italian to win the European Formula Two Championship. As you can see on the picture below, BMW was very pleased with their young driver’s victory, member of their Junior Team.
