Sad news from Argentina: former Formula One driver Carlos Reutemann has passed away at the age of 79.

The legendary racing driver from Santa Fe was runner-up in the Formula One Drivers’ World Championship in 1981 and a veteran of 146 Grand Prix.

His debut in F1 had been sensational, when he captured pole position in his Brabham, at the 1972 Argentinian Grand Prix. His legend was born.

Carlos Reutemann, who has driven for the Brabham, Ferrari, Lotus and Williams teams between 1972 and 1982, was idolised by his countrymen, who called him “Lole” with a lot of affection.

He has won 12 Formula One Grand Prix, including the British (picture below), Brazilian and Monaco races, started 6 times from pole position and finished no less than 45 times on the podium.

After his racing career, Carlos Reutemann turned into politics and even became Governor of the Santa Fe province and senator. A monument of motor racing has left us.
