Uncertainty reigned on the starting grid of the 1000 km of Spa in 1970, when the teams were hesitating on the choice of tires for the race (picture above) – one can see the crew of the Écurie Francorchamps entered yellow Ferrari 512S driven by Derek Bell and Hugues de Fierlant, franticly change the wheels minutes before the start.

The race is remembered for the fantastic battle between the two Gulf Porsche’s 917 of Jo Siffert and Pedro Rodriguez, fighting from the moment go, and passing the famous Raidillon of the Eau Rouge, side by side!

The Belgian Ferrari had to be satisfied with eighth place at the checkered flag, behind four 917K and three other 512S, amongst which the one of Jacky Ickx /John Surtees, which finished second, as only one in the same lap as the winners Jo Siffert /Brian Redman.

  1. Cette Ferrari s’embrasa brutalement et de manière spectaculaire lors d’un ravitaillement vers la mi-course. A ma grande surprise, elle repartit et les pilotes furent plus rapides que jamais dans cette deuxième partie de la course.
