Win and crash!

The 1975 Austrian Grand Prix was held at the then called Österreichring at Zeltweg. The race was shortened by heavy rain, meaning only half of the points were awarded to surprise winner Vittorio Brambilla (and to the first six finishers).

Mastering the wet weather, the race was won by Italian hard charger Vittorio Brambilla driving a March 751-Cosworth. It was Brambilla’s first and only Formula One win in his seven year Grand Prix career.

He took a 27-second win over British driver James Hunt in his Hesketh 308B. Eight second further back was Tom Pryce in his Shadow DN5, in the first of just two podiums in his abbreviated career.

As Brambilla crossed the finishing line, probably surprised to see the checkered flag waved, he crashed his orange March into the barriers! Fortunately, this incident did not have any influence on the result of the Grand Prix because the finishing line had been crossed.
