The Benetton B188 is a Formula One racing car designed by South-African Rory Byrne and raced in the 1988 Formula One season and in the first half of the 1989 season.

In 1988, Benetton was effectively the Ford works team as they had exclusive use of the 3.5L Ford DFR V8 engine, where others running the older Ford Cosworth.

The Benetton B188 was driven by excellent and serious Belgian Thierry Boutsen and by the hard charging, chain smoking Italian Alessandro Nannini (seen here in the car).

The B188 was a consistent performer and was usually the class of the atmospheric cars, in a year dominated by the McLaren-Honda’s who took 15 race wins out of 16 races.

Boutsen was impressive scoring 27 points, including 5 podium finishes, to claim 4th in the Drivers’ Championship, while Nannini scored 12 points only, including the first two podiums of his career at the British and Spanish Grand Prix.

I was very lucky to drive this car (thanks Benoit Claeys, picture here-under) in June 2011 on the Spa-Francorchamps circuit, a fantastic and emotional experience.
