Born in Bavaria (Germany),  Jochen Mass participated in 114 Formula One races for the Surtees, McLaren, ATS, Arrows and March teams.

In 1976, he was team-mate to James Hunt at McLaren, but had to play second fiddle to the faster and charismatic Brit, who went on to win that year’s championship at the very last race, at the Mount Fuji race track.

Mass failed to win a race that year and finished 9th in the championship, although he was leading (main picture) the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, having made the right tire choice and should have won, but the race was stopped because of Lauda’s near fatal accident. Then the race was restarted and he finished a fine third.

Jochen Mass won one Formula One race, the 1975 Spanish Grand Prix, achieved 8 podiums and scored a total of 71 championship points.
