The first full face helmets appeared in 1968, Dan Gurney wearing a Bell helmet, first during practice at Zandvoort (driving a Brabham) then in the race at the Nurburgring (at the wheel of his Eagle).
At the time, the helmet manufacturers were experimenting different solutions as you can see here, the Buco helmet with a retractable visor being tried by Jackie Stewart (Matra). The Scot being a strong advocate of improved security for the drivers since the end of the 60’s.
